Comparing the zones
The free zones US founders ask us about most
What each one is generally built around, whether you are comparing a Dubai free zone company setup against business setup in a UAE free zone elsewhere. Use it to narrow the shortlist, not to make the decision — the zone that fits depends on your activity and visa count more than on anything in this table.
| Free zone | Emirate | Typically suits |
|---|---|---|
| IFZA | Dubai | IFZA company setup and IFZA company formation suit cost-led general trading and service licenses; an IFZA license is often the entry point |
| Meydan Free Zone | Dubai | Meydan Free Zone company setup for services and consultancy wanting a Dubai address |
| DMCC | Dubai | DMCC company formation and DMCC company setup for commodities and trading — DMCC in Dubai carries a name banks recognise |
| DIFC | Dubai | Business setup in DIFC for finance, fintech, funds and holding structures |
| JAFZA | Dubai | JAFZA freezone licenses for logistics, import and export — Jebel Ali free zone JAFZA Dubai suits anything needing port access |
| Dubai South | Dubai | Dubai South freezone for logistics, e-commerce fulfilment and aviation |
| Dubai Internet City & Media City | Dubai | Dubai Internet City free zone and Dubai Media City free zone for Dubai free zone IT companies, software, media and marketing |
| Dubai Airport Free Zone | Dubai | Dubai Airport Free Zone for air-freight dependent trading and services |
| RAKEZ | Ras Al Khaimah | RAKEZ company setup and RAK free zone company setup, with Ras Al Khaimah free zone licenses cheaper than Dubai |
| SPC Free Zone | Sharjah | SPC free zone licenses for media, publishing and services, issued quickly |
| SHAMS | Sharjah | SHAMS free zone Sharjah and Sharjah free zone media, creative and consultancy licenses |
| Ajman Free Zone | Ajman | Ajman company setup — Ajman freezone, or Ajman free zone Ajman UAE, has among the lowest entry costs in the country |
| Fujairah Creative City | Fujairah | Business setup in Fujairah free zone for consultancy, services and media |
| UAQ Free Trade Zone | Umm Al Quwain | Umm Al Quwain free zone licenses for low-cost trading and small operations |
| ADGM | Abu Dhabi | Abu Dhabi company formation and business setup in Abu Dhabi, for finance, asset holding and corporate structures |
Indicative only. Each free zone sets its own activity list, visa allocation, premises rules, fees and processing times, and these change from time to time. What suits your business depends on what you actually intend to do and how many visas you need, so treat the table as a starting point for the conversation rather than a decision.

What we handle
From choosing the zone to your first renewal
6 things have to happen for a free zone company to actually operate. Doing them from another timezone, on your first attempt, is why people hand the lot to one firm rather than managing six relationships.
Free zone or mainland
Where a free zone stops being the right answer
This decision sets who you are allowed to sell to and how much of the setup can happen without you being in the UAE. You do not need to arrive at the call knowing which one you want.
-
Most US owners
Free zone company
Selling internationally, or services from anywhere
- 100% foreign ownership, with no local partner required
- A renewable residence visa for you, and family you sponsor
- No premises requirement in most zones — a flexi-desk is typically enough
- Faster and cheaper to set up than mainland
- Visa allocation is generally capped by your package
- Selling into the UAE domestic market usually needs a distributor or a mainland branch
-
Selling inside the UAE
Mainland company
UAE customers, retail, or government contracts
- Trade directly with customers anywhere in the UAE
- Eligible to bid for government and semi-government work
- Physical premises with a registered tenancy are generally required
- No fixed visa cap — premises size usually decides it
- We will tell you on the call if this is the better fit for you
What it costs
Dubai free zone company setup cost, and what moves it
Your figure depends on the zone, the activities you license, how many residence visas you need and whether you take any physical space. This is the honest starting point, and it is the same number your advisor works from.
US dollar figures are indicative and move with the exchange rate. Your written proposal is issued in AED with every line itemised.
Payment plans available — the cost can be spread rather than paid up front.
- Free zone company
- from $4,500
- Additional residence visas
- Quoted per person
- Mainland company
- Quoted individually
Starting price, exclusive of government and authority fees that vary by zone, activity and visa count. Mainland is quoted individually because premises and approvals vary too widely for a published figure to be useful. Every line is itemised in your written proposal before you commit.
Your UAE residence visa
What residency a free zone license actually gives you
A license supports a renewable residence visa — for you, and for the family you sponsor on it. Here are the routes, and where the Golden Visa genuinely sits.
| Visa route | Who it is for | Term |
|---|---|---|
| Investor or partner visa | You, as the owner or partner in your own UAE company. This is the visa a company license supports. | 2 years, renewable |
| Employee visa | Staff you hire under your license. How many you can hold depends on your setup and premises. | 2 years, renewable |
| Family and dependants | Spouse, children and in many cases parents, sponsored on your own residence visa once it is issued. | Tied to your visa |
| Golden Visa | A separate route with its own qualifying criteria — property investment at a set threshold, public investment, or recognition as a specialist in certain fields. Setting up a company does not grant one. | 10 years |
There is no permanent residency in the UAE. Every route above renews, including the Golden Visa. Anyone describing a UAE visa as permanent, or implying that a company license comes with a Golden Visa, is selling you something that does not exist. We will tell you on the first call which route your situation actually qualifies for.
Setting up from the other side of the world
What happens from your desk, and what needs you in the UAE
Every consultant says “100% remote”. It is not quite true, and knowing the difference before you start is the point. Dubai is roughly a 12-hour flight from New York and sits 8 hours ahead, so we schedule calls in your morning and plan the one trip that needs you in person around your dates. Here is the honest split.
-
Done while you are in the US
No travel required
- Choosing the zone, activities and license type
- Name reservation and the license application
- Incorporation documents signed digitally
- License issued and your establishment card opened
- Bank application prepared and submitted
Documents are collected digitally and signed remotely. For most free zone setups the license is issued before you have booked a flight.
-
Requires you in the UAE
Done in person, in the UAE
- Medical fitness test for your residence visa
- Emirates ID biometrics
- Bank account activation, where the bank requires you in person
- Premises inspection and Ejari, if you choose mainland
These are requirements set by the authorities rather than our process. We tell you which stages need you here before you start, so the timing is not a surprise.
How it works
How Dubai free zone company formation works, step by step
You keep the same advisor from the first call through to renewal — one name, one number, one timezone to deal with.
-
Step 1Tell us what the business does
30 minutes on your activity, where your customers are, how many visas you need and whether you intend to spend time in the UAE. An advisor calls you in your hours.
-
Step 2Get a zone recommendation in writing
We shortlist the zones that genuinely fit, explain why the others do not, and send a written proposal with every line itemised — license, authority fees, visas and what renews annually.
-
Step 3License applied for
Name reservation, incorporation documents and the license application prepared and submitted to the zone. You sign digitally from the US.
-
Step 4Visa, banking and tax
Your residence visa processed when you travel, bank introduction made, and corporate tax and VAT registration completed.

Questions
What US founders ask us about free zones
1. Is a consultation useful if I haven’t picked a zone yet?
That is the normal starting point, and it is the decision the call is most useful for. Arriving with a zone already chosen, picked from a price comparison, is how people end up with a license that does not cover what they actually do. Start with the business and the zone follows. 30 minutes, free, no obligation, at a time that works in your timezone.
2. Which Dubai free zone company is best for a US business?
There is no single best zone, and anyone who names one before asking what you do is selling rather than advising. It comes down to 4 things: the activity you need licensed, how many residence visas you want to hold, whether you need physical space, and whether the zone’s name matters to your customers or your bank. A consultancy selling to European clients and a trading business importing stock have almost nothing in common in this decision. We shortlist against what you are actually building, and because we are partnered with almost every zone, there is none we are incentivised to push.
3. IFZA, Meydan, RAKEZ or DMCC — which suits a US founder?
Broadly, and as a starting point rather than a rule: IFZA is usually chosen on cost for general trading and service licenses; Meydan Free Zone suits service and consultancy businesses wanting a Dubai address without taking premises; DMCC is the established commodities and trading zone, with a name that carries weight with banks and counterparties, at a higher price. Each sets its own activity list, visa allocation and fees, and those change, so the comparison that matters is against your activity rather than against each other in the abstract.
4. Can I do a dubai free zone company setup while living in the US?
Most of it, yes. Choosing the zone and activities, reserving the name, signing incorporation documents and getting the license issued are typically all done remotely, and for many free zone setups the license is issued before you book a flight. What generally cannot be done from the US is the residence visa itself — the medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics usually require you to be in the UAE in person. Those are requirements set by the authorities rather than our process, and we tell you which stages need you here before you start.
5. How much does a Dubai free zone license cost?
Free zone licenses start from around $4,500, and your figure depends on the zone, the activities you license, how many residence visas you need and whether you take any physical space. US dollar amounts are indicative and move with the exchange rate — your written proposal is issued in AED with every line itemised, including the authority fees that sit outside the license. Payment plans are available. Mainland is quoted individually because premises and approvals vary too much for a published figure to be useful.
6. Do I need to visit Dubai to keep the company?
The company itself does not require you to live in the UAE. Your residence visa, once issued, generally has its own requirement to enter the UAE periodically to keep it valid, and the interval is set by the immigration authority rather than by us. Many US owners run the company from the US and travel occasionally. If you intend to become a UAE tax resident rather than simply hold a visa, that is a different question with a different answer, and one to settle with a US adviser first.
7. Can I sell to customers inside the UAE with a free zone company?
Not directly, in most cases. A free zone license is built for selling internationally and within your zone; reaching the UAE domestic market usually means appointing a local distributor or opening a mainland branch. If your customers are US, European or Asian, this restriction will probably never affect you. If you intend to sell to UAE businesses and consumers, mainland is likely the better answer and we will say so.
8. Ajman free zone, Sharjah free zone or Dubai — which emirate should I register in?
It matters less than people expect for a business trading internationally, and more than expected for banking and perception. Ajman free zone UAE, Sharjah free zone, Ras Al Khaimah free zone, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain free zone options are generally cheaper than Dubai and work well for straightforward trading and service companies. A Dubai license can be easier to explain to a bank or a counterparty, and some sectors effectively expect one. We will tell you honestly when the cheaper emirate is the sensible answer.
9. Will I be able to open a UAE business bank account?
Bank onboarding is where most new companies stall, and it depends on your activity, your structure, your own background and how the file is presented. We prepare the application to the standard UAE banks expect and introduce you to banks that accept your profile. No consultant can guarantee a bank’s decision, and you should be wary of any who claims otherwise.
10. Does a free zone company give me a Golden Visa?
No. A free zone license supports a renewable investor or partner residence visa, typically for 2 years, and you can sponsor family on it. The Golden Visa is a separate route with its own qualifying criteria — property investment at a set threshold, public investment, or recognition as a specialist in certain fields. Setting up a company does not grant one, and anyone implying otherwise is misleading you. There is also no permanent residency in the UAE; every route renews.
