Why founders choose the UAE
What you are actually getting, in plain terms
The six things Dutch-based founders ask about most. No spin on any of them — where a benefit comes with conditions attached, the conditions are stated.
| What | How it works | Why it matters when you are starting out |
|---|---|---|
| Personal income tax | There is no personal income tax in the UAE on salary or on dividends drawn from your company. | What the business pays you is what you keep — subject to your own position at home. |
| Corporate tax | 9% on taxable profit above AED 375,000 a year. At or below that threshold the rate is 0%. | A business in its first year or two often falls under the threshold entirely. |
| Free zone income | A qualifying free zone person pays 0% corporate tax on qualifying income, subject to meeting the conditions. | Relevant if your customers are outside the UAE. The conditions are specific and we will tell you whether you meet them. |
| Ownership | 100% foreign ownership across free zones and the large majority of mainland activities. | No local partner, no sponsor, and no share of your profits going to someone for signing a form. |
| Residence | A company licence supports a renewable residence visa for you, and dependants’ visas for your family. | You can live where the business is rather than running it on a tourist visa. |
| Connectivity | Direct flights to most of Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and a time zone that overlaps the Dutch working day. | Matters from day one if you intend to sell into more than one market. |
What we handle
From the first call to your first renewal
6 things have to happen for a company to actually trade. Doing them from another timezone, on your first attempt, is why people hand the lot to one firm rather than six.

Free zone vs mainland
Trade license types in Dubai — free zone or mainland, which one fits you
This decision sets who you are allowed to sell to, how many visas you can hold and how much of the setup can be done without you being here. You do not have to arrive at the call knowing which one you want.
-

-
UAE market
Mainland company
Best if you will sell inside the UAE

- No cap on how many visas you can hold
- Eligible to bid for government contracts
- Physical premises and an Ejari tenancy are required
What it costs
What a trade license in Dubai costs
Your final figure depends on your activity, how many residence visas you need and whether you require physical premises. These are the honest starting points, and they are the same numbers your advisor works from.
Euro figures are indicative and move with the exchange rate. Your written proposal itemises every line before you commit to anything.
Payment plans available — the cost can be spread rather than paid up front.
- Free zone company
- from €4,130
- Additional residence visas
- Quoted per person
- Mainland company
- Quoted individually
Starting prices, exclusive of government fees that vary by activity and visa count. Mainland depends heavily on premises. Every line is itemised in your written proposal before you commit.
Your UAE residence visa
What residency you actually get, and the Golden Visa question
A UAE company licence supports a renewable residence visa — for you, and for the family you sponsor on it. Here are the routes, and where the Golden Visa genuinely sits.
| Visa route | Who it is for | Term |
|---|---|---|
| Investor or partner visa | You, as the owner or partner in your own UAE company. This is the visa a company licence supports. | 2 years, renewable |
| Employee visa | Staff you hire under your licence. How many you can hold depends on your setup and premises. | 2 years, renewable |
| Family and dependants | Spouse, children and in many cases parents, sponsored on your own residence visa once it is issued. | Tied to your visa |
| Golden Visa | A separate route with its own qualifying criteria — property investment at a set threshold, public investment, or recognition as a specialist in certain fields. Setting up a company does not grant one. | 10 years |
There is no permanent residency in the UAE. Every route above renews, including the Golden Visa. Anyone describing a UAE visa as permanent, or implying that a company licence comes with a Golden Visa, is selling you something that does not exist. We will tell you on the first call which route your situation actually qualifies for.
Setting up from the Netherlands
Getting a trade license in Dubai from the Netherlands — what is remote, what is not
Every consultant says “100% remote”. It is not quite true, and knowing the difference before you start is the point. Here is the honest split.
-
Done while you are in the Netherlands
No travel required
- Your free consultation and setup recommendation
- Company name reservation and initial approval
- Licence application filed with the authority
- Corporate documents issued and sent to you digitally
- Bank application prepared and submitted for pre-review
- UAE corporate tax and VAT registration
Documents are collected digitally and signed remotely. For most free zone setups the licence is issued before you have booked a flight.
-
Requires you in the UAE
Done in person, in the UAE
- Medical fitness test for your residence visa
- Emirates ID biometrics
- Bank account activation, where the bank requires you in person
- Premises inspection and Ejari, if you choose mainland
These are legal requirements set by the authorities, not our process. We tell you which stages need you here before you start, so nothing about the timing is a surprise.
How it works
How a Dubai trade license application works, step by step
You keep the same advisor from the first call through to renewal — one name, one number, one timezone to deal with.
-
Step 1Tell us what you are building
Twenty to 30 minutes on the business, whether you intend to relocate, how many visas you need and when. A real advisor calls you, not a call centre.
-
Step 2Get a recommendation in writing
The jurisdiction, licence and visa route we would use and why, in plain English, with every cost itemised. Nothing is filed until you say go.
-
Step 3We file while you stay put
Documents collected digitally, name reserved, approvals lodged and your licence issued — the majority of it without you leaving the Netherlands.
-
Step 4Launch and keep running
Medical, Emirates ID and bank appointments arranged around your travel — then renewals, tax registration and accounting under the same account manager.
Meet the team behind your next chapter
In the UAE since 2010, 75,000 companies set up and 15+ languages spoken across the floor. Your advisor stays with you from the first call through to your first renewal — no handover to a processing team you have never spoken to.
Your advisor spends a good part of the first call working out what you are actually building, before anyone mentions a licence.

Questions
Your trade license Dubai questions, answered
1. Is a consultation useful if I don’t know which license type I need?
Yes — that is what the 30 minutes is for, and it is where most calls from the Netherlands start. You do not need to have chosen between commercial, general trading or a specialised activity, and you do not need a company name. What the call gives you is the honest version of 4 answers: what you intend to sell, who you intend to sell it to, how many residence visas you need, and whether you need to be in the UAE to run it. Those decide the licence type, the authority and the cost. If a Dubai trade license does not do what you are hoping it will do, you will hear that on the call rather than after you have paid for one. Free, no obligation, at a time that works in your timezone.
2. How much does a trade license in Dubai cost?
A free zone trade license starts from €4,130, and that is a starting point rather than a package price. What you actually pay depends on the activities you licence, the authority you file with, how many residence visas you need and whether you take physical space. Mainland is quoted individually because premises and approvals vary too much for a published figure to be honest. Whoever quotes you, ask three things in writing: whether government and authority fees sit inside the figure, how many visas it includes, and what renews annually and at what price.
3. What is the cheapest trade license in Dubai?
The cheapest licence is rarely the cheapest outcome. Entry-level packages tend to limit the activities you can hold, cap your visa allocation at zero or one, or sit in a zone your bank is less comfortable with — and the cost of re-licensing in year two is far higher than the saving in year one. If budget is the constraint, say so on the call and we will tell you which genuinely low-cost options fit what you are building, including zones outside Dubai where the saving is real and the downside is none.
4. What is the difference between a trade license, a commercial license and a business license?
In everyday use people mean the same thing, which is why the terms get mixed up. Formally, the trade licence is the document the authority issues; commercial is one category of it, alongside professional, industrial and tourism. A business license in Dubai is the generic phrase rather than a specific document. What actually matters is not the label but the activity list printed on it, because that is what decides what you may legally sell.
5. Can I put several activities on one license?
Usually yes, within limits that vary by authority. Most allow a number of related activities on one licence, with additional ones available for a fee, but they generally need to sit within the same group — combining consultancy with general trading is not always possible on a single licence. We check what you intend to do now and what you expect to add later, because adding an activity after the fact costs more than including it at the start.
6. Can I apply for a Dubai trade license from the Netherlands?
Almost all of it. Activity selection, name reservation, initial approval, the licence application and your corporate documents complete remotely while you are in the Netherlands, and for most free zone licences the licence is issued before you book a flight. What cannot be done from home is the residence visa — the medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics require you to be in the UAE in person, and some banks want to meet you. We tell you which stages need you here before you start.
7. Free zone or mainland — which trade license do I need?
It follows from who your customers are. If you need to sell directly to businesses and consumers inside the UAE, that points to a mainland licence, which generally requires physical premises and a registered tenancy. If your customers are European, Dutch or international, or you are selling services and digital products, a free zone trade licence is usually better economics and far simpler to arrange remotely. You do not need to decide before the call.
8. Should I buy an existing trade license instead?
Be careful. Buying an existing licence means inheriting whatever sits behind it — unpaid fees, immigration quota history, outstanding fines, and activities that may not match what you intend to do. The saving is usually smaller than it looks once the transfer and amendment costs are counted, and the due diligence needed to do it safely is not trivial. For most people starting out, a new licence is cheaper and cleaner. We will say so even though it is the smaller job.
9. Is a residence visa included in the quote?
Visas are quoted per person rather than bundled, because the number you need is the single biggest variable and quoting an average would mislead you. Your licence supports a renewable residence visa for you as the investor or partner, and you can sponsor family on it. How many visas you can hold depends on your authority, your package and in mainland cases your premises. We itemise each one in the written proposal.
10. Does a UAE trade license change my Dutch tax position?
Not by itself, and it is worth being clear before you start. Dutch law looks at where a company is effectively managed rather than where it is licensed, so a UAE company whose decisions are taken from the Netherlands can still be treated as a Dutch tax resident. The Netherlands applies no statutory day-count test either — residence turns on whether you keep a durable personal tie, assessed on the whole picture. Note too that while the Netherlands–UAE treaty has been in force since 2010, it defines a UAE-resident individual as a national of the UAE, so it may not cover you personally. We are UAE corporate service providers, not Dutch tax advisers; settle your own position with a Dutch-qualified adviser.
11. Will I be able to open a bank account with it?
Bank onboarding depends on your activity, your structure, your residency status and how the file is presented — and some activities are harder than others regardless of how clean the licence is. We prepare the application to the standard UAE banks expect and introduce you to banks that accept your profile. Holding a UAE residence visa materially improves your position, which is why we sequence the visa before the account. No consultant can guarantee a bank’s decision.
12. What documents do you need from me?
Passport copies for every shareholder, a clear description of what the business will actually do, and three proposed company names. Some activities need extra approvals from a sector regulator, and some banks ask for a CV or proof of address. We confirm exactly what applies to your case on the first call, so you are not assembling paperwork you do not need.
