Business setup in Dubai, from the US

Dubai company registration is the easy part. The decisions before it are not.

Business setup in Dubai is not difficult in itself. It goes wrong because the decisions that cost money get made in the first week, before you know enough to question them. The wrong jurisdiction, activities scoped too narrowly, a visa allocation that runs out at your second hire. All fixable, all cheaper to get right first time.

  • We tell you which setup you need Mainland, free zone or e-commerce is not a preference — it follows from what you sell and who you sell it to. Working that out is the first 20 minutes of the call and it costs you nothing. Picking a free zone first and checking afterwards whether your activity fits is how people end up in the wrong structure.
  • The parts you have never done before Activity codes, name reservation, initial approval, establishment cards, immigration files, Emirates ID. None of it is difficult once you know the order it happens in — and all of it is filed from this side while you carry on from yours. Knowing the order is what you are actually hiring.
  • Someone to call afterwards Renewals, UAE corporate tax, VAT and accounting sit with the same group under the same account manager. Getting the license is the easy part. The first year after it is when a new founder wants someone who picks up the phone.

Why founders choose the UAE

What you are actually getting, in plain terms

The six things US founders ask about most. No spin on any of them — where a benefit comes with conditions attached, the conditions are stated.

What How it works Why it matters when you are starting out
Personal income tax There is no personal income tax in the UAE on salary or on dividends drawn from your company. What the business pays you is what you keep.
Corporate tax 9% on taxable profit above AED 375,000 a year. At or below that threshold the rate is 0%. A business in its first year or two often falls under the threshold entirely.
Free zone income A qualifying free zone person pays 0% corporate tax on qualifying income, subject to meeting the conditions. Relevant if your customers are outside the UAE. The conditions are specific and we will tell you whether you meet them.
Ownership 100% foreign ownership across free zones and the large majority of mainland activities. No local partner, no sponsor, and no share of your profits going to someone for signing a form.
Residence A company license supports a renewable residence visa for you, and dependants’ visas for your family. You can live where the business is rather than running it on a tourist visa.
Connectivity Direct flights to most of Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East within about 8 hours. Matters from day one if you intend to sell into more than one market.

What we handle

From the first call to your first renewal

6 things have to happen for a company to actually trade. Doing them from another timezone, on your first attempt, is why people hand the lot to one firm rather than six.

  • Working out what you actually need

We start from what you will sell and who will buy it, and tell you which jurisdiction and license that points to — including when it is the cheaper one.

  • A written recommendation

Set out in plain English with every line itemised, so you can compare us against anyone else without guessing what has been left out.

  • Registration handled for you

Name reservation, initial approval and the license application filed, with all authority correspondence managed from this side.

  • Your residence visa

Establishment card, immigration file, investor and family visas, medical and Emirates ID — processed in-house.

  • Banking preparation

Your application prepared to the standard UAE banks expect, and introductions to banks that accept your activity and residency profile.

  • The year after you launch

UAE corporate tax and VAT registration, accounting and your first annual renewal through CZTA inside the same group.

Free zone vs mainland

Business setup in Dubai — free zone or mainland, which one fits you

This decision sets who you are allowed to sell to, how many visas you can hold and how much of the setup can be done without you being here. You do not have to arrive at the call knowing which one you want.

What it costs

What company setup in Dubai costs

Your final figure depends on your activity, how many residence visas you need and whether you require physical premises. These are the honest starting points, and they are the same numbers your advisor works from.

US dollar figures are indicative and move with the exchange rate. Your written proposal is issued in AED with every line itemised.

Payment plans available — the cost can be spread rather than paid up front.

Your UAE residence visa

What residency you actually get, and the Golden Visa question

A UAE company license supports a renewable residence visa — for you, and for the family you sponsor on it. Here are the routes, and where the Golden Visa genuinely sits.

Visa route Who it is for Term
Investor or partner visa You, as the owner or partner in your own UAE company. This is the visa a company license supports. 2 years, renewable
Employee visa Staff you hire under your license. How many you can hold depends on your setup and premises. 2 years, renewable
Family and dependants Spouse, children and in many cases parents, sponsored on your own residence visa once it is issued. Tied to your visa
Golden Visa A separate route with its own qualifying criteria — property investment at a set threshold, public investment, or recognition as a specialist in certain fields. Setting up a company does not grant one. 10 years

There is no permanent residency in the UAE. Every route above renews, including the Golden Visa. Anyone describing a UAE visa as permanent, or implying that a company license comes with a Golden Visa, is selling you something that does not exist. We will tell you on the first call which route your situation actually qualifies for.

Setting up from the other side of the world

Setting up a business in Dubai from the US — what is remote, what is not

Every consultant says “100% remote”. It is not quite true, and knowing the difference before you start is the point. Here is the honest split.

  • Done while you are in the US

    No travel required

    • Your free consultation and setup recommendation
    • Company name reservation and initial approval
    • License application filed with the authority
    • Corporate documents issued and sent to you digitally
    • Bank application prepared and submitted for pre-review
    • UAE corporate tax and VAT registration

Documents are collected digitally and signed remotely. For most free zone setups the license is issued before you have booked a flight.

  • Requires you in the UAE

Done in person, in the UAE

    • Medical fitness test for your residence visa
    • Emirates ID biometrics
    • Bank account activation, where the bank requires you in person
    • Premises inspection and Ejari, if you choose mainland

These are legal requirements set by the authorities, not our process. We tell you which stages need you here before you start, so nothing about the timing is a surprise.

How it works

How Dubai company formation works, step by step

You keep the same advisor from the first call through to renewal — one name, one number, one timezone to deal with.

  1. Step 1

Tell us what you are building

Twenty to 30 minutes on the business, whether you intend to relocate, how many visas you need and when. A real advisor calls you, not a call centre.

  2. Step 2

    Get a recommendation in writing

The jurisdiction, license and visa route we would use and why, in plain English, with every cost itemised. Nothing is filed until you say go.

  3. Step 3

We file while you stay put

Documents collected digitally, name reserved, approvals lodged and your license issued — the majority of it without you leaving the US.

  4. Step 4

    Launch and keep running

Medical, Emirates ID and bank appointments arranged around your travel — then renewals, tax registration and accounting under the same account manager.

Make the most of your first call

30 minutes goes a long way if you bring 3 things.

  • What you will sell, and roughly where your customers will be
  • Whether you intend to relocate, split your time, or stay in the US
  • Roughly when you want to be trading, and whether anyone else needs a visa

You do not need every decision settled to start the conversation. That is what the call is for.

Meet the team behind your next chapter

In the UAE since 2010, 75,000 companies set up and 15+ languages spoken across the floor. Your advisor stays with you from the first call through to your first renewal — no handover to a processing team you have never spoken to.

Your advisor spends a good part of the first call working out what you are actually building, before anyone mentions a license.

Questions

What US entrepreneurs ask us first

1. Is a consultation useful if I haven’t decided whether to do this at all?

Yes, and that is most of the calls we take from the US. You do not need a structure in mind, a zone picked or a company name chosen. What the 30 minutes gives you is the honest version of the 4 answers that decide everything else: what you intend to sell, who you intend to sell it to, how many residence visas you need, and whether you need to be in the UAE to run it. Those 4 point at one setup rather than a shortlist, and the cost follows from them. If a UAE company does not do what you are hoping it will do, you will hear that on the call rather than after you have paid for one. 30 minutes, free, no obligation, at a time that works in your timezone.

2. I have never started a business before. Is that a problem?

It is most of who we talk to. The UAE sets no prior-experience requirement, and there is no minimum capital to deposit for most free zone setups. What matters is a clear description of what you intend to sell and to whom — everything else follows from that: the activity codes, the license type, the jurisdiction and the visa route. If you cannot answer that yet, the call is still worth having, because working it out is the part we do most often.

3. Starting a business in Dubai as a foreigner — can I do it from the US?

Yes, and for most activities you can own it outright — 100% foreign ownership applies across free zones and the large majority of mainland activities, with no local partner or sponsor. Nationality is not a barrier and you do not need to be resident in the UAE before you start. What setting up a company in Dubai from the US actually requires is a passport copy, a decision on your activity, and one trip once the license is issued. The sequence that works is to license the company first and travel once for the visa stages, rather than flying over to start the process.

4. Can I set it all up from the US, or do I need to travel to Dubai?

Almost all of it. Name reservation, initial approval, the license application and your corporate documents complete remotely while you are in the US. What you cannot do from home is the residence visa — the medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics require you to be physically in the UAE, and some banks want to meet you before activating an account. We tell you exactly which stages need you here before you start.

5. How do I register a company in Dubai, step by step?

Company registration in Dubai runs in a set order, and the order matters because each stage gates the next. First the activity, because it decides everything after it. Then trade name reservation, then initial approval from the authority, then the memorandum and shareholder documents, then the license itself, then the establishment card and immigration file, and only then visas. Company formation in Dubai goes wrong most often at the first stage — a trade name gets refused because it does not carry an activity descriptor, or the activity chosen does not actually cover what the business does. We handle the filing and the back-and-forth; what we need from you is a passport copy and a clear description of the business.

6. What is included in a Dubai company setup package?

That is the question worth asking of anyone quoting you, because Dubai company setup packages are built differently and the headline rarely covers the same things. Ask 3 things and insist on them in writing. First, whether government and authority fees, name reservation and initial approval sit inside the figure or get added later. Second, how many residence visas the package actually allows and what each extra one costs. Third, what renews annually and at what price. We are a partnered CSP across almost every zone in the UAE, so the recommendation is not limited to whichever registration we happen to sell.

7. Company formation, company registration, incorporation — are they different things?

In the UAE they describe the same process from different angles, and the 3 words are used interchangeably in the market. Company formation in Dubai covers the whole exercise — choosing the entity, agreeing ownership, preparing documents. Business registration in Dubai is the filing itself, where the company is entered on the register and the license is issued. Dubai company incorporation usually means the same thing again. UAE company formation as a phrase covers all of it. There is no separate incorporation certificate the way a US founder expects from a Delaware filing — the trade license is the evidence that the company exists.

8. Which setup should I choose?

It comes down to who your customers are. If you need to sell directly to people and businesses inside the UAE, that points to mainland. If your customers are international, or you are selling services and digital products, a free zone is usually better economics and far simpler to set up. E-commerce sits in its own lane for online retail. You do not need to decide before the call — deciding is what the call is for, and we will tell you which fits even when it is the cheaper option.

9. Should I set up in Dubai, or somewhere else in the UAE?

Dubai is the default and for most US founders it is the right one — the banking, the client perception and the flight connections are all better. But company setup in UAE terms is not only Dubai. A business setup in UAE jurisdictions further out, in Ajman, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah or Umm Al Quwain, can cost meaningfully less for the same ownership and the same renewable residence visa, and if you are selling internationally and never meeting clients at an office, the saving is real with no practical downside. Where it does matter is banking: some banks are more comfortable with some zones than others, which is a conversation worth having before you register rather than after.

10. Do I need a local partner or a sponsor?

Not for a free zone company, and not for most mainland activities either. UAE law now permits 100% foreign ownership across the large majority of commercial activities. A small number of strategic activities still require an Emirati partner, and we confirm whether yours is one of them on the first call. Anyone telling you that you must hand a local partner 51% of a standard trading or consulting business is describing a rule that no longer applies.

11. Do I get a residence visa? Is that the Golden Visa?

You get a renewable residence visa as the investor or partner in your own company, usually for 2 years and tied to your license, and you can sponsor your spouse and children on it. That is not the Golden Visa. The 10-year Golden Visa is a separate route with its own qualifying criteria — property investment at a set threshold, public investment, or recognition as a specialist in certain fields. Be careful with anyone who implies that setting up a company gets you one. We will tell you honestly whether your situation qualifies.

12. Does a UAE company change my US tax position?

This is the one worth being blunt about, because the US works differently from almost everywhere else. The United States taxes its citizens and green card holders on worldwide income regardless of where they live. Moving to Dubai does not end your US filing obligation the way leaving the UK or Australia can. A UAE company owned by a US person can also bring controlled foreign corporation and GILTI rules into play, and foreign accounts carry FBAR and FATCA reporting. None of that makes a UAE company a bad idea — the 0% personal income tax in the UAE is still real, and there are legitimate reliefs such as the foreign earned income exclusion — but the arithmetic is genuinely different for a US person and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. We are UAE corporate service providers, not US tax advisers. Settle this with a US-qualified adviser before you commit, not after.

13. Do I need business setup consultants in Dubai, or can I do it myself?

You can file most free zone applications yourself, and some people do. What you are buying from a consultant is the order things happen in, knowing which activity codes match what you actually intend to sell, and someone who has seen the rejection before you get it. From the US the practical difference is bigger, because a query from the authority lands in your inbox at 2am and a wrong answer costs you a resubmission. If your setup is genuinely simple and you have time to learn the process, doing it yourself is a legitimate choice, and we will say so on the call rather than pretend otherwise.

14. What is an LLC, and do I need one?

An LLC — limited liability company — is the standard mainland structure, where your liability is limited to what you put into the business. It is what you would register if you need to sell directly inside the UAE. A free zone company gives you the same limited liability without the mainland requirements, which is why most people setting up from overseas end up there instead. Which one you need follows from who your customers are, not from the label.

15. Will I be able to open a bank account?

Bank onboarding is where most new companies stall, and it depends on your activity, your structure, your residency status and how the file is presented. We prepare the application to the standard UAE banks expect and introduce you to banks that accept your profile. Holding a UAE residence visa materially improves your position with most banks, which is why we sequence the visa before the account rather than after. No consultant can guarantee a bank’s decision, and you should be wary of any who claims to.

16. What documents do you need from me?

Passport copies for every shareholder, a short description of your business activity, three proposed company names, and for LLC structures an MoA or shareholder agreement. Some activities and some banks ask for extras such as a CV or proof of address. We confirm exactly what applies to your case on the first call, so you are not assembling paperwork you do not need.

Start with a conversation, not a commitment.

30 minutes with an advisor, free and with no obligation, at a time that works in your timezone. You leave the call knowing which setup fits, what it involves, what you can do from the US and what you cannot — in writing.
